looking kind of spooky and withdrawn, like he could be underwater
08 February 2003 - 2:45 pm

the sun skims the rooftops and the hazy green hills, treetops shot through with white rays and the pain of exposure. sitting in my bed i look up out the window and all i see is blue sky. i woke up this morning at 7 and couldn't sleep, but i was still in a dissociative cloud from last night. eva and i visited dxm with mediocre results. after two hours i was still nauseous so i made myself vomit and then i felt better and started to go into the dream. everything and its echo exist side by side. the room had a presence that fit together. i felt like i was in the hush between silence the next awakening.

i am free. i am free. the city looks so dazzling today. if i only venture to the red & black to get quarters for laundry, let that journey wrap me up in its wings with wind from the sea.

today donna and i spent a long time trying to define "episteme."

A grouping of statements that suggests a consistent pattern in how they function as constituents of a system of knowledge. An episteme may be a cultural code, characteristic system, structure, network, or ground of thought that governs the language, perception, values, and practices of an age. The episteme is what makes it possible to know and to speak at a given time through ordering the world in a particular way in a particular period. Due to the episteme, different disciplines look more like each other in one period than the same discipline in another period.

while discussing episteme, donna took out one of my foucault books and found a twenty dollar bill in it. we can't figure out where it came from. this is the second time random money has appeared from my books (we found $30 on this day). donna decided it might be a good idea to go through the rest of my books to see if there was any more money, but she got bored after a while. i'm still really mystified. we're way too poor to misplace $50, and so is anyone who would have been over here. money is falling from the sky. the other day s. found $20 on the ground.

Let's make a religion out of the phrase "phatic communication" which comes from Malinowski, the anthropologist. Phatic communication happens when you're walking down a hall at work and someone asks, "How're ya doin'?", and you don't literally describe how you're doing. You just answer, "How are you doin'?" You echo them only - that's phatic communication. Look up the word "phatic". It means a communication of general sociability.
