hitchhiking back to portland part 2:

after about 15 minutes someone picked us up.   it was a nice guy with a peace sign in his back window who ate granola from a cup while he drove.   the mountains in the morning were beautiful.   he dropped us off in a small town called willits, near the high school.   it was really foggy and cold and mountainy.   todi stuck his thumb out while i watched the high school kids walking to school and tried to warm my toes in my hands.   after about 45 minutes i was almost frozen to death, but finally a jolly guy in a bmw stopped.   he talked about how he used to hitchhike all over california, and lived in san francisco during the summer of love.   he was going all the way to portland but dropped us off in the middle of nowhere, because he had some "business" to do for a few hours.   he said if we were still there when he got back he'd pick us up again.   he left us in the giant redwoods state park.   the only thing there was a small grocery store and some closed resort places.   we got really good burritos for $2.50.   then we sat out by the exit, not really expecting anyone to pick us up since the place was so deserted....
