hitchhiking to portland part 3

hitchhiking back to portland part 3:

a guy in a pickup truck stopped and said he'd drive us to eureka, about an hour away.   we sat squished in the front seat.  the guy was wearing a dapper black and white houndstooth suit and eating a turkey sandwich.  he told us about growing up in the area when almost no one lived there, and how the logging companies were clearcutting the forest all around his house.  he pointed out the areas of the hills where there were no trees left.   after a while i fell asleep and woke up in eureka.  it took less than a minute to get a ride from there to arcata, a hippie college town that looked really nice, if we'd had the time to stay.   from there we got a ride a few minutes up the road.   i was annoyed, because there had been much more traffic in arcata, but then a lady stopped who was driving all the way to portland!!!   yeah!!   she had a pickup truck with one of those roof things over the back, with a mattress in it.   we sat in back and took pictures of the sun setting on the ocean, until it got dark and we went to sleep, finally.  (remember, we stayed up all night in ukiah).  she drove us about 8 hours and dropped us off at our door at about 11:30.
